“The interesting thing about the jewelry industry is that you can never know everything. There is continued opportunity to learn and grow,” says Steve when asked about what has kept him focused on the estate jewelry industry for going on 50 years.
Steven Schiffman has actively been buying and selling jewelry for almost 50 years. His introduction to the jewelry industry began at a young age when he would often accompany his father to work at his pawn shop in Philadelphia. It was there, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of items, from golf clubs to antiques and collectibles, and of course, jewelry that Steve developed his passion for jewelry.
As a young adult, Steve pursued his passion for jewelry buying with countless trips overseas to London, Rio and Japan, to name a few. His extensive travels broadened his knowledge and cultivated a unique global perspective about every aspect of buying and selling jewelry. Steve’s vast international network ensures we have a new home for every type of jewelry item!
After more than two decades of buying and selling fine jewelry from his retail store on the most coveted corner at Eighth and Sansom Street on Jeweler’s Row in Philadelphia, Steve left the city to expand his market in the suburbs, on the Main Line. Now located in Haverford, his focus lies on buying jewelry from the general public and other jewelers.
The jewelry business has many ebbs and flows and what was in style five years ago can be out of style now….“There is little point today in holding on to jewelry in the hopes it will increase in value, unless you are planning on wearing it. As a buying agent for many regions, I must constantly keep on top of the market and try to know where and what merchandise can turn. I don’t maintain inventory. My strong point is knowing who is buying and who is selling.”
So, while other types of jewelry businesses are hoping the doors to their retail stores will open up to a flow of jewelry buyers, Steve Schiffman prefers to make his clients by asking, “What’s in your jewelry box?”
